7/9/2011 Atkins Park is busy at nighttime, no matter what day of the week. Many people enjoy coming here to drink, but the food is pretty good too. There are two Atkins Park locations in metro Atlanta: this one (the original location) in Virginia Highland and one in Smyrna. The restaurant originally started as a deli in 1922, but has now turned into a popular tavern. The folks behind Atkins Park also own Ormsby's in Westside. In the evenings, the restaurant is dark and candle-lit, romantic almost, but with a festive and often times loud atmosphere. As you'd expect, they serve a lot of typical pub grub here. However, several of their dishes have regional influences (e.g. shrimp and grits, "Texas" chicken sandwich) and are a step up from what you'd normally find at a generic bar in terms of quality of ingredients, preparation, and creativity. I've tried the Park Burger, which is thick and juicy. You can load it up with any number of unique and special extra toppings, which include Gruyère cheese (from Switzerland), fried green tomatoes, and bacon jam. I recommend the pimento cheese. The burgers are hearty and quite filling. I've also tried the Big Green Egg Pulled Pork Sandwich. Atkins Park is the only restaurant I've noticed that explicitly offers foods smoked in a Big Green Egg. The pork sandwich is a North Carolina BBQ-style sandwich with vinegar and slaw, so it's got a sour taste to it. The restaurant used to serve a really tasty smoked chicken dish with collard greens and sweet potatoes, but it's no longer on the menu. Despite the sometimes hectic atmosphere, service is typically very good with friendly and attentive servers. The food comes out reasonably fast as well. Free parking is available along any of the neighborhood side streets. Finally, one of the best things about this place is they're open late every night, until 3am, except for Sundays (midnight close).
